Gilding is the process of applying thin sheets of gold, silver or other metals to a surface. If the surface is very smooth (like glass) the result can be as bright as a mirror. Gold in particular can be a very durable and weather-resistant material, lasting 20 years or more outdoors, so it is often used for public projects such as statues and crucifixes.
